Media design students make films for the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture!

On Monday, January 21, 2019, Lower Saxony's Minister for Science and Culture Björn Thümler was a guest at Faculty III - Media, Information and Design. Together with HsH President Josef von Helden and Media Design Professor Nils Loof, he watched eight films on which 38 students worked for a semester on behalf of the Ministry of Science and Culture (MWK).

The idea for the project arose in the summer of 2018: The media design students were to implement the topics of dementia, early childhood education and vaccinations in the form of a short film for the MWK event series "Research made in Lower Saxony". Prof. Nils Loof was in charge of the project. The first-year students worked in eight groups on the scripts, searched for interview partners, organized the shooting dates and fine-tuned the final cut.
In conversation with the students, Minister Thümler was enthusiastic: After the screening, the minister told the students, "I am impressed that you have created such great films in such a short time in your first semester." He said he was sure that the films would provide an emotional introduction to the controversial scientific topics of the event series and contribute to the discussion.
Afterwards, the minister spoke with the students about the process of making the films, about difficulties and time pressures during filming, and about a lot of emotional information that had to be processed. HsH President Josef von Helden emphasized that precisely these aspects are indispensable for a practice-oriented course of study and thanked the project initiator* for giving the students the opportunity to try their hand at a "real" project.
The first three films will already be shown on February 21 at "Research made in Lower Saxony". The series of events regularly brings together scientific experts from different disciplines to discuss a current topic from their respective perspectives. Afterwards, the audience has the opportunity to talk to the scientists. The next event will take place on February 21 at the University of Osnabrück on the topic "What do our children need? Early childhood education in research". (Press Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts / Photo: Julius Schien)
